Vintage 1880s Wooden Beechwood Swan Butter Print
Product Description
Carved in the late nineteenth century from solid beechwood, this swan butter print is a rare example of American folk craftsmanship shaped by hand and daily ritual. The swan, rendered in quiet relief with gently curved wings and a long arched neck, would have been pressed into freshly churned butter to mark and decorate each round.
The beechwood has developed a soft, golden patina from over a century of use, its surface smooth and worn in places from repeated handling. The carving remains beautifully intact, a testament to both the quality of the wood and the maker’s skill.Butter prints were once kept in kitchen drawers or hung by the hearth, used not only for decoration but as a symbol of care and domestic pride.
The swan, long a motif of fidelity and grace, adds meaning to an object designed for the most ordinary, essential act of making.
