This turn of the century Chinese wooden lidded basket features its original hand painted red dragon and floral motif. Bold and expressive, the decoration reflects a time when everyday utilitarian objects were also canvases for folk symbolism and artistry.
The paint has aged with grace, showing areas of wear that reveal the history and handling of the piece while preserving the strength of the imagery. Today it stands as a sculptural object as much as a vessel, well suited to display on open shelving or use as storage, carrying forward a sense of craft, color, and enduring character.
