Vintage 19th Century Haviland Limoges Midnight Oyster Plate was crafted in France by Haviland Limoges and imported by Wright, Tyndale & Van Roden of Philadelphia, one of the leading American importers of fine European china during the late nineteenth century. Executed in the richly ornamented Turkey style, the plate features a deep navy blue ground with five molded oyster wells, each decorated with painted and embossed shells that bring remarkable depth and naturalism to the composition.
Hand applied gilt outlines each oyster well as well as the scalloped rim, creating a striking contrast against the saturated blue glaze. Designed for the elegant service of oysters during the height of the Gilded Age, the plate reflects the refinement and artistry that made Haviland porcelain a fixture on the finest American tables. Its richly layered decoration and sculptural modeling remain as captivating today as when it first crossed the Atlantic more than a century ago.
