Before rolling suitcases and overhead bins, trunks like this one carried a traveler’s belongings by rail, steamship, and carriage. Made in Paris around 1890, this French travel trunk retains its original brass hardware stamped “Au Bon Marché, Paris,” the legendary Parisian department store.
Trunk makers chose solid poplar for its combination of strength and relatively light weight, then reinforced the case with raised wooden battens, blackened metal bands, brass corner guards, hinges, and locking plates. More than a century of travel has softened the wood to a warm honey-brown patina and beautifully aged the original metal side handles.
Lift the lid to reveal a clean white-painted interior with the original crosshatched ribbon detailing. Generous enough for blankets, linens, or other household treasures, it offers the same useful storage that sent it traveling more than a century ago.
