Product Description
Nineteenth century sporting equipment, this silver mounted hunting horn is crafted from a polished ox horn and adorned with finely worked silver fittings. The mountings include a suspension chain for shoulder carrying or wall hanging, a scalloped rim sleeve, and a decorative appliqué depicting two pheasants, a fitting tribute to the traditions of the hunt.
Designed for use in the field, horns such as this were carried by huntsmen and could be sounded to communicate with hounds and fellow riders across great distances. Beyond their practical purpose, they also played a ceremonial role. At the conclusion of a successful day's sport, the horn could be inverted and filled with wine or spirits for a celebratory toast among companions.
