Evergreen garlands frame the fireplace, candles flicker on the mantel, and the evening stretches ahead with nowhere else to be. Old stories are retold, absent friends remembered, and glasses raised to another year of memories made and those still to come. Auld Lang Syne feels particularly appropriate tonight.

Inspired by the collected beauty of an English country cottage, the room is dressed in rich color, treasured antiques, and the comforts of Christmases remembered. A century-old chessboard awaits its next move beside a pair of generously proportioned wingback chairs. One is occupied by a rather distinguished stag, his handsome likeness woven into a jacquard pillow, looking every bit the invited Christmas Eve guest. The other, reserved for the Mrs., holds an exquisite Anke Drechsel pillow, hand-embroidered in silk and velvet. Royal purple reversible throws from Alicia Adams Alpaca are close at hand, while traditional Black Watch tartan pillows and coordinating table linens bring a familiar Scottish heritage to the festivities.

On the mantel, a pewter reindeer takes his place among MATCH Pewter candlesticks and fragrant evergreen boughs. Underfoot, a vintage Landry & Arcari rug, handwoven in rich crimson and sage, lends the room the warmth and character of a home furnished over generations.

Champagne is poured into Artěl Staro hollow-stemmed flutes, their delicate silhouettes making the occasion feel all the more special. Later, a fine Scotch finds its way into hand-etched Artěl Woodland glasses, and someone suggests finishing that chess game. The fire is still going, the company is good, and Christmas morning can wait a little longer.
