A dramatic boar hunt encircles this nineteenth century Sarreguemines Majolica cachepot, modeled in high relief with hunting dogs in pursuit through a wooded landscape. Sculptural boar head handles flank the oval faience body, while four paw feet support the vessel below.
Rich glazes of brown, green, and blue settle into the deeply modeled surface, defining the animals, trees, and foliage with remarkable dimension. The naturalistic subject and saturated palette are characteristic of the elaborate Majolica wares for which Sarreguemines became celebrated. A similar example is illustrated on page 51 of Pierre Faveton’s “Les Barbotines.”
