This late 19th century solid wood trunk was valued for its natural insect repellent qualities. The wood helped safeguard clothing, furs, and documents from moths and other pests during long, humid sea voyages. Its strong aromatic scent served as a built in deterrent, making it a favored material for Victorian travelers and colonial officers, and for transporting luxury goods such as silk and tea from Asia to Europe.
