Product Description
A lush garden still life unfolds across this nineteenth century French folding four panel screen, painted with the abundance and theatrical scale of the European still life tradition. At its center, roses, peonies, and other garden flowers spill from a generous terracotta vase, surrounded by ripe peaches and melons resting upon the ground.
The composition continues with a second terracotta pot filled with white blossoms, an overturned ceramic jug, and a small fountain with cascading water. Behind them, dense foliage partially obscures a stone balustrade, creating the illusion of a secluded garden extending beyond the painted surface.
Tan leather trim frames the screen and is secured with brass nail heads, adding another layer of texture to the painted panels. The work is signed G. Wuoduśgue.
