Crafted from sycamore wood and decorated in the Black Watch tartan, this 1940s Mauchline ware compass reflects a tradition of Scottish craftsmanship that transformed practical objects into cherished keepsakes. The lid is embellished with a royal crown and the cypher GR VI in gold, denoting George Rex VI, King George VI, who reigned from 1936 to 1952.
King George VI served as Colonel in Chief of the Black Watch, one of Scotland's most distinguished Highland regiments. The inclusion of his royal cypher and crown alongside the regiment's tartan celebrates this patronage and acknowledges the Black Watch's esteemed position within the British Army. Such symbols would have resonated deeply during the wartime and postwar years, when military service and royal allegiance held particular significance.
The compass remains housed within its tartan decorated sycamore case, combining utility with national and regimental identity.
