Extremely rare this Hazeldell “Low Boy” creel holds up to twenty pounds of fish and was made by George Lawrence Co. of Portland, Oregon, and produced exclusively for Spalding & Bros., the sporting goods company founded in 1876. The basket bears Spalding’s distinctive round metal baseball cartouche, permanently riveted to the front below the closing strap and buckle. It features the characteristic finger-loop hanger associated specifically with the Hazeldell model.
The Spalding cartouche, measuring approximately 3.25 inches in diameter, replaced the standard George Lawrence badge as part of Spalding’s effort to create an exclusive product. Despite the branding, the creel remained a George Lawrence catalogued design. A documented example of the Hazeldell creel appears on page 58 of The Art of the Creel.
