Woven in France during the 1920s, this exceptionally large wicker basket was originally made for commercial display, where its generous proportions would have held bread, produce, or market goods. Tight horizontal weaving forms the substantial body, while open latticework along the sides introduces an airy architectural rhythm and allows the contents to remain visible.
A reinforced braided rim follows the broad oval form, providing strength for the demands of daily shop or market use. Its impressive scale and timeworn wicker preserve the utilitarian character of early twentieth century French commerce, when baskets such as this were fixtures of boulangeries, épiceries, and open air markets.
