A charming example of Scottish Mauchline ware, this early 20th century measuring tape is crafted from sycamore wood and decorated in the Stuart clan tartan. The surface is stamped McDonald in gold leaf, a personalized detail that reflects the popularity of tartanware souvenirs and accessories during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Designed for use in a dressmaker's or haberdasher's workbox, the case conceals a flexible woven silk measuring tape wound around a mechanical spindle. A hand operated winding mechanism retracts the tape neatly into its wooden housing, combining practicality with the ingenuity of early twentieth century design.
