Made at the turn of the twentieth century by the Edinburgh engineering firm Mactaggart Scott & Co., this substantial ship’s wheel is crafted from richly grained English oak with eight hand turned spokes radiating from a solid brass hub. A double rim construction is reinforced by a polished brass band, reflecting the precision and durability required of working maritime equipment.
The central hub is finely engraved “Mactaggart Scott & Co LTD – EDINBURGH,” identifying the celebrated Scottish manufacturer founded in 1898. Mactaggart Scott became an important supplier of steering gear, deck machinery, and hydraulic equipment to the Royal Navy and shipyards throughout Britain and abroad. The firm remains in operation near Edinburgh, continuing a tradition of naval engineering that began more than a century ago.
Likely made for a working vessel during the Edwardian period, the wheel retains the marks and patina acquired through age and use. The warmth of the aged oak is complemented by its original brass fittings, preserving the distinctly functional character of an early twentieth century piece of British maritime engineering.
