Bearded irises emerge from the surface of this late nineteenth-century basin with an almost botanical precision. Each blossom is sculpted in high relief, allowing the petals to fold, curl, and overlap just as they do in the garden. Rather than treating the flowers as decoration, Delphin Massier made them the architecture of the piece itself.
The scrolling handles seem to grow naturally from the iris petals, dissolving the boundary between function and ornament. This seamless integration of organic form was central to the Art Nouveau movement, where even the most practical objects were shaped by the rhythms of the natural world.
