19th Century Claude Lorraine Ferneley Horse Oil Painting

 Painted circa 1860 and titled “A Chestnut Hunter in a Loose Box,” this oil on canvas by British artist Claude Lorraine Ferneley depicts a chestnut hunter standing in profile within a stable. The horse is rendered with a finely modeled form, lustrous coat, alert expression, and elegant stance. A manger, bucket, and broom emerge from the softly painted interior, placing the animal within the familiar surroundings of the nineteenth century English sporting world.

The painting is presented in a carved giltwood frame with a molded outer edge and beaded inner border. A brass nameplate identifies the artist as “C. L. Ferneley, Exhibited 1851-1868.” On the reverse, an early Richard Green Fine Paintings label from London attributes the work to Claude Lorraine Ferneley and records its title as “A Chestnut Hunter in a Loose Box.”

Claude Lorraine Ferneley (1822-1891) was a British painter known for equestrian and sporting subjects, particularly horses, as well as hunting scenes, animals, and landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin in 1851 and 1853 and at the Royal Academy in London in 1868. Ferneley is also recorded in Benezit as a nineteenth century British painter of hunting scenes, animals, animated landscapes, and horses.

The canvas has been professionally relined for preservation and remains in excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use.
